Child Advocacy Center

What is a Child Advocacy Center (CAC)

The Child Advocacy Center (CAC) is a safe, child-focused facility that supports victims of child abuse and neglect as well as their non-offending caregivers. The CAC provides a comforting environment where alleged child and adolescent victims of a crime or witnesses to violence are interviewed by trained forensic interviewers. Family advocates provide non-offending caregivers with crisis intervention, resources, referrals for services, and victim compensation information. Our services facilitate the healing process for these children and families. As part of our Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) approach, the CAC encourages a coordinated response to allegations of child maltreatment, and team members work cooperatively on child safety, investigation, and prosecution of crimes against children.

What happens at the Child Advocacy Center?

Upon arrival, you'll be welcomed into our family room, where we'll explain the interview process. Your child will then speak with a trained interviewer in a separate, child-friendly room. The interviewer will create a comfortable environment, moving at your child's pace to gather necessary information. The interview is recorded to minimize repeated questioning. During this time, a family advocate will provide you with important information and support. We prioritize your child's comfort throughout the process and never force them to talk, as our entire process is designed with your child's well-being in mind.

What Should We Expect After The Interview

You will be able to talk to a member of the investigative team, which usually consists of Law Enforcement and/or a Child Protection Worker. They will tell you in general terms what they learned from the interview, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and voice your concerns. When Law Enforcement is finished with their investigation, they will send a report to the District Attorney's office, who will determine how to proceed. The Child Protection Worker will determine if any further intervention is needed in order to ensure your child's safety. The Family Advocate will contact you by phone or e-mail as a follow-up to answer any questions and help you with any additional resources you may need.
